About

Hurtwood Hostel, nestled deep in the Surrey Hills, offers simple and affordable accommodation for families, individuals, and groups. It holds the distinction of being England’s first purpose-built youth hostel, having opened its doors in 1935. The historic building retains most of its original features and provides a selection of 4-bed bunk rooms, 2 twin bunk rooms, and a double room. Set amidst 4,000 acres of woodland within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, YHA Holmbury St Mary serves as the perfect rural retreat. Its location makes it an excellent base for activity breaks and day trips to London.

Close to the small village of Holmbury St Mary, the hostel is not far from Holmbury Hill, which offers panoramic views of the North and South Downs. Whether you’re into walking, cycling, mountain biking, or horse-riding, there are fantastic routes right at your doorstep, making it an ideal choice for a family activity holiday1. The large grounds provide ample space for playing, relaxing, and even camping. Plus, being only 30 miles from central London, it strikes a balance between countryside tranquility and urban accessibility.
